Brief Psychotic Disorder

As the name indicates, Brief Psychotic Disorder is a psychotic disorder that is of short duration. It is most commonly seen in people who are in their 30s. It happens rather suddenly and lasts from two or three days to one month. Attributes may include hallucinations and/or delusions. This disorder can be brought on by major stressors or trauma, such as the sudden loss of a loved one or a physical or sexual assault. Sometimes, it can be a precursor to schizophrenia or other long-term mental disorder, but many times it is limited to one, brief incident.

If you have experienced a recent trauma or life stressor, and are concerned about your ability to cope, wondering if you may be experiencing a psychotic episode, we encourage you to seek help from a mental health professional, such as Dr. Wesley. We can help you determine whether there are truly psychotic issues going on or possibly some sort of medical or physical issues causing your unusual behaviors and symptoms.
