Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective disorder is characterized by some of the symptoms of both schizophrenia and mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder. If you are experiencing hallucinations, delusions, hearing voices or seeing things that aren't there, these are the psychotic symptoms of the disorder. If you are feeling extremely depressed or manic, these are the bipolar symptoms. With schizoaffective disorder, these symptoms usually do not occur together. When you are having a difficult bout with depression, normally you will not be having delusions.

This disorder is a chronic mental illness. However, it often does improve as one ages, especially if treatment is sought early on. As with schizophrenia, onset occurs usually in the late teens to early adulthood. If you believe you, your teen, or another loved one is suffering from these symptoms, it would be good to seek help earlier than later. Usually treatment consists of both an antipsychotic medication along with regular therapy sessions.
